When it all began -

"Not forsaking our assembling together..." Hebrews 10:25

When the then English service of the Geylang Chinese Methodist Church moved out to form Pentecost Methodist Church, the English-educated children of the Geylang church members had difficulty worshipping in Hokkien. After consultations with the Board of Stewards, it was decided that an English service be established to continue God's ministry for the English educated flock attending Geylang Chinese Methodist Church. It also provided an avenue to reach out to the English educated youths in the Geylang area. This was the beginning of what was to later become Charis Methodist Church.

This English Service started off as an evening service and it was inaugurated in 1966 by Bishop Lundy and pastored by the late Rev M. T. Fang. Some of the pioneers of the English Service were Tan Wee Pin, Victor Koh, Philip Khoo, Loo Tet Yin, Goh Say Hong and Goh Beng Sien.

As time went by, the congregation grew. With increasing membership, Rev Peter S. T. Lim was invited to take on the role as the Associate Pastor. He rendered much assistance in counseling and guiding the leaders and members. Throughout this time, the focus was on the central tenets of the Christian faith, including worship, fellowship, witnessing, outreach and the study of God's word. The English congregation was a very active part of the Geylang church. It was involved in all the activities of the mother church and rallied the congregation in the re-building of the mother church at Geylang.
