Historia - A Journey by God’s Grace

The history of Charis Methodist Church is indeed a sojourn of grace. From its beginnings in 1966 till now, God's faithfulness has been manifest throughout.

Life for Charis began as the Methodist Youth Fellowship of Geylang Chinese Methodist Church. An English service was started soon after. With God's guidance and blessings, the congregation grew over the years and we became an autonomous Church in 1989. For many years, we did not have a place to call 'home' till end 1992 when we purchased the present church premises at Koon Seng Road.

We renovated the Church building and reconstructed the adjoining bungalow in 1999. Works were completed in 2001. Today, we have a refurbished church building and a three storey multi-purpose resource center with a basement. Indeed it is only by the grace of God that all these were possible.

The choice of "Charis" for the name of our Church was to reflect God's goodness and grace. Rosalind Goh, the Charis choir director, who proposed this name says:

"I first learnt about the word 'Charis' from the late Dr Benjamin Chew, an elder of Bethesda Katong Church, where I grew up in. At a very young age, I visited his home at St. Patrick's Road, which he named 'Charis'. This was edged in my memory. It was only later that I understood that it meant "God's grace". When asked to propose a name for the church, my choice was instantaneously "Charis". Indeed, we have tasted God's goodness and the outpouring of His grace all these years. We are and should be a symbol of that grace. "
