Last month when I visited Bethany Home, it was with great joy that I baptized two residents: Mdm Wong Wai Hun (82 years) and Mr Koh Teng (77 years). Since the third quarter of 2008, I have been visiting Bethany home regularly on the last Tuesday and the third Sunday of each month together with Uncle Peter Kow.

I must confess that initially, I wasn’t quite certain that it was worth the while because I couldn’t tell if they were following my sharing and if they were listening at all or retained anything after my visits.

Mdm Wong Wai Hun was resistant when I suggested that she be baptized since she has already professed faith in Christ last year. Each time, I would remind her not to delay her baptism and she would have her excuses. Then brother Koh Teng wanted to be baptized and she decided to come along as well. What a great rejoicing it was!

Some members from our church were there when the baptisms took place. Mdm Wong had the runs that day and wanted her baptism postponed. There are many obstacles often strewn in the way of the one who has committed herself. We were not daunted but went up to her ward and baptized her in bed!

So far, it’s been me and Uncle Peter and on occasions, Christina Zee as well. If you are able, do come and join us on a regular basis.  You can help to lead some songs.

At the moment, Pastor leads the songs and teaches. If you can come along, it won’t feel so lonely. The old people, some badly ravaged by diabetes, dementia, do grow on you with regular contact. My fears and reservations have now been lifted as they greet me on my visits. We are planning a visit soon under the 40 DOC project but you are most welcomed to come along with me whenever you can.

Matthew 25:37-40 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’”
